“This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” Dialogue

“I came because of your father”
I chose this quote from the reading because it explains a lot about Victor and Thomas’s relationship with one another. They grew up as very close friends and went their separate ways when everyone had had enough with Thomas’s stories and Victor did not want to be seen as his friend anymore. Victor had to go finalize his father’s life and needed a way to get to Arizona and Thomas had the money. I think Thomas went for two reasons.
First, he had said he made a promise to Victor’s father about taking care of Victor because he knew he was moving away from his family and the reservation. Second I think that he had to have closure for himself. Thomas grew up with no family and he felt like Victor’s family was his own and he treated Victor’s father with great respect, more so then Victor because he never knew what he had. I also believe that Thomas went because he knew that somewhere deep down, he and Victor were still friends, the kind of friends that don’t need to see each other often. Thomas knew that being there for Victor and offering to help him get to Arizona was a great help to him.

  1. Hi Dustin,

I love this quote because it changes the story and leaves me with questions. Of all the people Arnold could have chosen, he picked Thomas to look after Victor. It also suggests that Arnold knew he'd be leaving and he knew his absence would leave Victor needing help. This quote also establishes Thomas as Victor's guardian. It makes Thomas a much stronger character than we see in the film; he made a promise and is keeping it.

    Thanks for your insights.

  2. I agree, I think that this quote sheds some light on the relationship between the two main characters. Although they went their separate ways as they matured into young adulthood, they could rely on each other when they had no one else to turn to.

  3. Hi Dustin,
I really liked the quote you picked, it does show and tell alot about Victor and Thomas' realtionship. What still doesnt click is why Victor hated him so much as a child but missed him like crazy when he got older. Keep up the great work Dusitn.

  4. Hey Dustin,

Thomas kept his promise long after Arnold was gone, and I think that was something very important for him, as he admired Victor’s father so much. Victor might have not appreciated it at first, but after he received so much of Thomas’ help and learned about his promise to Arnold, Victor respected Thomas on a deeper level; even though, their relationship could not change after that.
